I got a marketing email from hobbycraft to say that they're now selling plush pumpkins ahead of halloween
so of course I went to the website, which led me to this delightful photo series showing the different sizes available:

I'm...pretty sure this is an industrial furnace fire grate? It might help if there was more visual indicator of what this is attached to and some way to determine the actual size of what I'm looking at.
It was at a vintage hardware store attached to nothing but for sale at a couple hundred dollars. The rib cage part is exactly big enough that you could put someone's head in it and the ribs can close up
Okay yeah, it's an antique boiler-room furnace fire grate, then, if it's that size. They're designed to let you open one at a time to push logs and/or coal in and then close it without letting anything else fall out on top of your head. The 'rib crusher' bit is designed to let people stick a poker in between the slats to move heaps of coal or half-burnt logs to the side so nothing falls down when they're adding more fuel.
I'm glad to finally know and I'm glad the practicality of this object necessitated that it looks sick as hell
